Towards the 100th Anniversary of the Suzuki Method
We would like to express our sincere thanks for the numerous entries received from both Japan and overseas for ‘Message for the Future’, a joint project between Monthly Suzuki and the Suzuki Members’ Magazine.
• What I have gained from studying the Suzuki Method
• What I value most in my musical education
• What I hope for the future of the Suzuki Method
• What I hope the Suzuki Method will be like by the time it celebrates its 100th anniversary
• A message I would like to leave for future generations of children
This initiative was shared not only in Japan but also with Suzuki communities around the world, in collaboration with the International Suzuki Association (ISA). As a result, we have so far received contributions from the United States, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Italy, Denmark, Lithuania and Israel. Although the indicative deadline has passed, we expect the number of submissions to continue to grow. It is our hope that, as these individual voices come together, they will eventually take shape—like a great tree—to shape the future of the Suzuki Method.
This instalment features a ‘Message for the Future’ from Ms Anna Sibley, who is originally from Poland and currently works as a piano teacher in the UK. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Ms Sibley, together with Ms Ruth Miura, a piano teacher trainer based in Spain, swiftly set up a fundraising website to support the Ukrainian Suzuki Association. The donations, gathered from members of the Suzuki community in Japan and around the world, were delivered to aid the revival of the Suzuki Method in Ukraine and to support local children; this was reported in the December 2022 issue of Monthly Suzuki.
Education for Peace - the Suzuki vision
Dr Shinichi Suzuki said, “Character first, ability second.” As we look towards the 100th anniversary of the Suzuki Method, I find myself asking: "what kind of people, and what kind of world, do we want Suzuki education to help create?"
For me, the answer is cooperation.
Through music, children learn to listen, to appreciate one another, to celebrate another person's success, to work together and to respect differences. These are not simply musical skills. They are skills for life, and perhaps skills for a peaceful world.
My hope for the future is that we will take these values even further. That our Suzuki community will become a place where teachers genuinely listen to and learn from one another, share rather than compete, welcome different perspectives and model the cooperation we ask of our children.
I work with and support Ukrainian children and teachers and see first hand, what humans are capable of and what happens when cooperation and peace are absent. It has made Dr Suzuki's vision feel more urgent, not less.
As Montessori said, “People educate for competition, and competition is the beginning of every war.”
So my message to future generations is simple: let us educate not only for musical ability, but for kindness, courage, respect and cooperation.Character first. Ability second. And perhaps, one child at a time, let us educate for peace.
