7月15日、Facebookで紹介されていたのが、子どもたちのグループレッスンの写真や、先生たちらしき人たちの笑顔、そして鈴木鎮一先生を大きく舞台に掲げたコンサート写真でした。国は、エジプトです。
 
　そこで、ツテを頼り、まずはヨーロッパスズキ協会（ESA）代表で国際スズキ協会（ISA）理事、フルート科のティーチャートレーナーであるアンケ・ファン・デル・ベイル先生に連絡。いつもご対応の速いアンケ先生は、すぐにエジプトのネハド・ガマル・エル・ディン先生に連絡をしてくださり、今回の原稿と写真を入手することができました。この連携は本当に速く、私たち日本人も見習う必要があります。
 
　以下の日本語は、エジプトのスズキのヴァイオリン科指導者でESAから公式指導者認定第1号でもあるネハド先生からの原稿を元に、小見出しをつけるなど編集しています。鈴木鎮一先生の初期の生徒の1人だった故小林武史先生がベネズエラでエル・システマの創設に深く関われたのと同様に、エジプトでも大きな働きかけをされたことに、感慨を覚えます。

エジプトにおけるスズキ・メソード

ヴァイオリン科指導者　ネハド・ガマル・エル・ディン
 
　カイロ・オペラハウスは日本政府の助成金によって設立されたため、民音コンサート協会が後援するプログラムを通じて同オペラハウスにスズキクラスが開設されたことは、日本とエジプト両国の文化交流事業において重要な一環となりました。1993年、カイロ・オペラハウスにおいてスズキ・プログラムが正式に導入され、エジプトにおけるスズキ・メソードの歴史が始まりました。

 
創設期

オスマン・エル・マフディ氏と小林武史先生

　その年、小林武史先生は最初のスズキクラスの設立を直接に指導するため、カイロ・オペラハウスを数回訪問しました。先生は、後に同オペラハウスにおけるスズキ・プログラムのディレクター兼コーディネーターとなるオスマン・エル・マフディ博士と緊密に協力しながら、教育体制を築いていきました。

　1994年、オスマン・エル・マフディ博士は5週間の研修プログラムに参加するため来日しました。その間、東京で開催されたスズキ・メソードのグランドコンサートに参加し、鈴木鎮一先生と直接お会いする栄誉に浴しました。エル・マフディ博士はディナーで短いスピーチを行ない、その後、鈴木先生からカイロ・オペラハウスにおける最初のスズキ・プログラム創設への尽力に対し、感謝の言葉が贈られました。

　翌年、エル・マフディ博士はカイロ・オペラハウスのスズキ・クラスの生徒5名を引率して再び来日しました。一行は小林先生の生徒たちとの合同コンサートに参加し、日本とエジプトのスズキ・コミュニティの教育的・文化的な結びつきをさらに深めました。

　その後も、オスマン・エル・マフディ博士の指導のもと、多くの指導助手とともにグループレッスンが継続されました。また、アレクサンドリアやダマンフールのオペラハウスにもスズキ・クラスが開設されました。

さらに、アレクサンドリア図書館でも、ファウジー・イブラヒム、ネヴィーン・エル・マフムーディ、イハブ・テクファ、カメリア・マディ、マイケル・ザカリー、モハメド・バラカット、ヤスミン・エル・セラフィー、ネルミン・ハリル、シェリー・エスカンダーといった多くの講師陣によってスズキ・メソードが行なわれました。

新しい世代への継承
　2016年にオスマン・エル・マフディ博士がカイロ・オペラハウスを退任すると、これまで助手を勤めて来た指導者たちが指導とプログラム運営の両方の責任を引き継ぎ、カイロにおけるスズキ・メソードが継続されました。
 
　2024年には、カイロ音楽院高等研究所でオスマン・エル・マフディ博士に学び、1998年から同氏のスズキ・アシスタントを務め、2005年から2015年までアレクサンドリア図書館のスズキ・クラスの責任者だったネハド・ガマル・エル・ディン先生が、エジプト人のヴァイオリン・スズキ指導者として初めて、ヨーロッパ・スズキ協会から公式の指導者認定を取得しました。ネハド先生は、イザベル・モレイ・スアウ先生のもとで第1レベルを、クリストフ・ボスア先生のもとで第2レベルを修了し、今年トルコにてウィルフリード・ファン・ゴルプ先生のもとで第3、第4、そして第5レベルの研修を修了しました。

国際基準のスズキ・メソードへ
　スズキ・メソードは、世界共通の理念として、個人レッスンとグループレッスンの両方を組み合わせることを基本としています。この教育法は、演奏技術の向上、一人ひとりの音楽的成長、アンサンブル能力の育成を育みながら、生徒間の協力の精神、相互尊重、そして音楽への愛を育むことを目的としています。

　エジプトでは創設以来、主にグループレッスンが中心でしたが、2024年、ネハド先生により、国際的なスズキ教育基準を取り入れた国内初のスズキ・スタジオを設立しました。このスタジオは個人レッスンとグループレッスンの両方を実施し、一人ひとりの技術的・音楽的課題に応じた指導を行なうことで、スズキ・メソード本来の理念に沿った教育を実践しています。
 
初めてのESA講師によるワークショップ

ウィルフリード・ファン・
ゴルプ先生

　2025年、このスタジオは、ベルギーのヨーロッパ・スズキ協会のティーチャー・トレーナーであるウィルフリード・ファン・ゴルプ先生を招き、同協会のメンバーが主導するエジプト初のスズキ・ワークショップを開催しました。
　 3日間のワークショップは、二つのテーマとして「世界におけるスズキ・メソード」、「保護者が子どもの音楽教育を支える重要な役割について」の講演で締めくくられました。また、参加した子どもたちによる成果発表コンサートも開催されました。

2026年4月、エジプトは初めて4名のヴァイオリン科のスズキ生徒を、第12回ヨーロッパ・スズキ・スチューデント・コンベンション（トルコ・イスタンブール）へ派遣しました。年齢もレベルも異なる4人の生徒は大会に参加し、
その演奏はヨーロッパ・スズキ協会の著名な指導者たちから高く評価され、音楽性と演奏の完成度を称賛されました。

 
 
エジプト国営テレビで特集
　2026年7月、ネハド先生は、エジプト国営テレビで放送された「エジプトにおけるスズキ・メソード」の特集番組に出演しました。番組では、1993年の導入から現在に至るまでのエジプトにおけるスズキ・メソードの発展について紹介しました。

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

　　On 15 July, a post on Facebook featured photographs of group lessons for children, smiling faces of what appeared to be teachers, and a concert photograph with Dr Shinichi Suzuki prominently displayed on stage. The country in question is Egypt.

　　So, drawing on our contacts, we first got in touch with Ms Anke van der Beil, representative of the European Suzuki Association (ESA), board member of the International Suzuki Association (ISA), and teacher trainer for the flute section. Anke sensei, who is always quick to respond, immediately contacted Ms Nehad Gamal El-Din in Egypt, enabling us to obtain this article and the photographs. This collaboration was remarkably swift, and we in Japan would do well to follow their example.
 
　　The Japanese text below is based on a manuscript provided by Nehad sensei, an Egyptian Suzuki violin teacher and the first person to be officially certified by the ESA, and has been edited to include subheadings and other formatting. We are deeply moved to learn that, just as the late Mr Takeshi Kobayashi—one of Shinichi Suzuki’s earliest students—played a pivotal role in the founding of El Sistema in Venezuela, Kobayashi sensei has also made a significant contribution in Egypt.
 

Suzuki Method in Egypt

 
　　As the Cairo Opera House was established through a grant from the Government of Japan, the creation of Suzuki classes at Cairo Opera House, thanks to a program sponsored by the Min-On Concert Association formed an integral part of this cultural initiative. In 1993, the Suzuki Program was officially introduced at the Cairo Opera House, marking the beginning of Suzuki music education in Egypt.

　　During that year, Kobayashi Sensei made several visits to the Cairo Opera House to oversee the establishment of the first Suzuki classes. He worked closely with Dr. Osman El Mahdy, who later became the director and coordinator of the Suzuki Program at the Opera House.
 
　　In 1994, Osman El Mahdy visited Japan in order to follow a 5 weeks training program, during which he  attended the annual Suzuki gala concert in Tokyo and had the honor of meeting Dr.Shinichi Suzuki. Osman El Mahdy was invited to give a short speech during the gala dinner, after which Dr. Suzuki expressed his appreciation for Dr. El Mahdy’s efforts in establishing the first Suzuki Program at the Cairo Opera House.

　　The following year, Dr. El Mahdy returned to Japan accompanied by five students from the Cairo Opera House Suzuki classes. Together, they participated in a joint concert with the students of Kobayashi Sensei, further strengthening the educational and cultural ties between the Suzuki communities in Japan and Egypt.

　　Since then, Suzuki classes have continued to offer group lessons under the direction of Osman el Mahdy, together with a number of his teaching assistants.

Also other classes were opened in opera house branches in Alexandria and Damanhur. Also in bibliotheca Alexandria with many teachers , e.g. Fawzy Ibrahim, Nevine El Mahmoudy, Ihab Tekfa, Camellia Madi, Michael Zakhary, Mohamed Barakat, yasmine El Serafy, Nermin Khalil and Sherry Eskander
 
　　Following his departure from Cairo Opera House in 2016, Osman el Mahdy’s  assistants assumed responsibility for both teaching and the administration of the program, ensuring the continuity of Suzuki education in Cairo.
 
　　In 2024, Nehad Gamal El Din, one of Osman el Mahdy’s former students at the Higher Institute of the Conservatoire and one of his Suzuki assistants since 1998, and the responsible of Suzuki classes in  Bibliotheca  Alexandria 2005:2015, became the first violin Suzuki teacher in Egypt to receive an official teacher certification from the European Suzuki Association. She successfully finished her 1st level with Isabel Morey Suau, 2nd level with Christophe Bossuat , 3rd, 4th and completing 5th level training in Turkey this year with Wilfried van Gorp .

　　As the Suzuki Method is internationally based on the integration of both individual and group instruction, it seeks  to develop students’ instrumental technique and enhance each learner’s individual performance, also  foster ensemble playing skills while cultivating a spirit of cooperation, mutual respect, and a love of music among students.
 
　　And as Suzuki programs in Egypt relied primarily on group lessons since its established , in 2024  the first Suzuki studio to implement the internationally recognized standards of Suzuki pedagogy was established by Nehad Gamal el Din. The studio integrates both individual and group lessons, thereby aligning its teaching practices with the core principles of the Suzuki Method while addressing the technical and musical needs of each student through personalized instructions.
 

Wilfried van Gorp

　　In 2025, The studio hosted Wilfried van Gorp, Teacher Trainer in the European Suzuki Association, from Belgium to conduct the first Suzuki workshop in Egypt led by a member of the Association.
 
　　The three-days workshop concluded with a lecture on the Suzuki Method worldwide and the essential role of parents in supporting their children’s musical education through the Suzuki approach.

　　The event also featured a concert showcasing the students’ achievements throughout the workshop.
 
　In April 2026, for the first time, Egypt was represented by four violin Suzuki students of different ages and levels at the 12th European Suzuki Students Convention, held in Istanbul, Türkiye.
　　Their performances received high praise from the Association’s distinguished teachers, who commended the students for their outstanding musical achievement and performance quality.
 
　　In July 2026, Nehad Gamal El-Din was invited to appear on a special episode in Egyptian National Television dedicated to the Suzuki Method in Egypt. During the program, she discussed the development of the Suzuki Method in the country, tracing its evolution from its introduction in 1993 to the present day.
